Launch of new research project on enterprise and entrepreneurship education

With the world economy facing turbulent times and individual countries rethinking how they and their citizens can flourish in the global marketplace, many would argue that the importance of enterprise and entrepreneurship education has never been greater. But does this mean teaching people how to write a business plan or is it about gaining a broader set of skills essential to success in the 21st Century?  Many rapidly developing nations are prioritising such education approaches at a time when England is cutting both funding and curriculum time. It is time to re-visit this important topic within the new global context.

The Pearson Centre for Policy and Learning, in partnership with the Education & Employers Taskforce, is undertaking a new research project exploring enterprise and entrepreneurship education and would like to invite those with knowledge of the area to share their views on the subject as part of an initial stakeholder consultation.

This research will explore three key questions:

  • What is enterprise and entrepreneurship education?
  • What impact does it have?
  • How should it be delivered?

Our research approach has three phases: mapping current international knowledge, data and expert opinion; gathering new evidence on the English school context to fill in some of the gaps; and then finally producing actionable recommendations that are of relevance to UK policy and beyond. A one page summary of the research can be found here.

There are three ways you can help us at this stage in the research:

  1. Respond to the three consultation questions online here (at most a single A4 sheet)
  2. Provide contact details of relevant stakeholders we should consult (or forward this page to them)
  3. Tell us about any other relevant research for our initial literature review

Findings from the first phase of research will be used to produce an interim report, launching 4-6pm on Monday 14th November in London (please save the date, details to follow).

New primary research, both qualitative and quantitative, will then be carried out in phase two with learners, educators and employers. If you or your organisation might be interested in helping us reach these key groups then please let us know.

Thank you in advance for your support with this project, questions and comments are most welcome by email or in the comments section below.

East Sussex County Council would be interested in working with you in phase 2, to provide access to learners, educators and employers. We have a range of contacts and projects that would faciliate this work and are very interested in the ways that enterprise can help raise aspirations and achievement for young people, as well as supporting economic development in the county.

I am interested in what you are doing, why you are doing it, what the research will be used for and how it will impact on our education system, business, society and the economy?

That’s a lot of questions at once! We’ve now added a link above to a one-page summary document about the research, please have a read and get in touch if you have further queries.

      Hi
Relevant research is a paper I wrote and am happy to forward:
Baden, Denise, 2011. ‘Opening Business Students’ Eyes: Embedding Ethics Through Service Learning’ In Stephen Brammer and Jamie R. Hendry (Eds.), Proceedings of the Twenty-Second Annual Conference of the International Association for Business and Society, in press.

Dr Baden that’s great thank you, we’ll factor that work into our initial literature review and add you to our stakeholder list.

        Hi Denise,
Because of some research we are doing at Sheffield on service learning, I would be really grateful if you could send me a copy of your paper. Are you going to IEEC2011? It would be good to meet up there, if you are
